ABC FAS-FAX 2011: NY Daily News Expands Digital Audience, Growing Overall Subscriptions
NEW YORK (May 3, 2011) – The New York Daily News has re-energized and re-focused its efforts as it moves into the future, delivering the news, sports and entertainment that New Yorkers want to read online, in print, via iPad app and on Blackberry, iPhone and Android mobile devices. New York’s Hometown Newspaper is becoming New York’s Hometown Everything as its digital audience grows significantly and single copy print sales begin to stabilize in the New York market.
According to data filed with the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) for the six-month period ending March 31, 2011, the Daily News remains the top-circulated newspaper in the New York metropolitan area. The Daily News reported daily circulation of 530,924 and Sunday circulation of 584,658.
“The Daily News brand has tremendous growth potential as we head into the future. We have already experienced growth in our subscription base by promoting our digital products and print single copies by focusing on the availability of our product at newsstands,” said Bill Holiber, President and CEO of the NY Daily News. “With a fresh concentration on digital and mobile offerings, retention, hyper-local coverage and armed with a new branding strategy, the Daily News is showing New Yorkers and people everywhere that to really ‘get’ New York, you have to get the Daily News.”
The Daily News has seen a vast improvement in single copy sales in the New York market area as new programs which focus on increasing street hawkers and retailers, exceptional reader contests, special offers and promotional partnerships take effect. Advertisers place a high value on a single copy purchaser whose engagement with the newspaper results in an active, daily buying decision at their local newsstand or retail outlet.
Recent enhancements to the Daily News print and online editions include additional borough, business and personal-finance news every day; more focused coverage of education, health, immigration and public transportation; new Best of New York and Free and Cheap features; and a livelier, more colorful presentation throughout. The ultimate real estate guide, ‘Best Places to Live in NY,’ was recently launched in conjunction with an innovative online lifestyle profiler component on NYDailyNews.com featuring over 500 neighborhoods.
Along with its 20-year reign as the largest circulated daily newspaper in the New York metropolitan area, the Daily News features the second largest local media website in New York (comScore Media Matrix March 2011). NYDailyNews.com is the sixth most visited newspaper website in the United States.
With the largest combined print and online audience of any metropolitan newspaper in the country based on readership numbers from the most recent Scarborough Report, the dominance of the Daily News in the New York market is further emphasized with over 2.2 million daily readers and 2.5 million Sunday readers (Scarborough 2010 R2).
